Did you ever find yourself sitting bored and a little hungry during the afternoon, wondering what to do with your time. Maybe it was too cold outside or even too hot, the motivation to do even as little as walking might have been an unpleasant and unwanted thought. Chatting with a friend would be nice - but where? A coffee shop is a nice place to go ... but after a coffee the chat-break would already be over and everyone hurry back to their homes/offices/work. Just meeting for coffee sounds so much like being in a hurry anyways.
How about going to meet for an afternoon tea then? Perfect!
But sadly - i have to say - it is not as easy to find a place that offers nice afternoon tea as it should be. If you're not by chance somewhere close to Britain, Hongkong or Singapore (i heard some hotels there still celebrate the afternoon tea in a very traditional way) it is pretty hard to get a nice version. Tea at 5 o'clock can be so much more than just drinking tea together and eating some fingerfood. It gives a feel of sophistication and somehow a little bit of cosyness. Hard to describe - but i like it. And i'm honestly thinking about inventing my own afternoon-tea-party with friends. :)
Until then my favorite 5-o'clock-tea place to go to in Vienna will be Haas & Haas.
Anyone who ever heard of Haas&Haas knows that they sell excellent tea and utensils. Right next to the tea shop - there is also a tea house where you can try your favourite types of tea right away, have some snacks and - starting at 3 pm - have your afternoon tea.
The big pot of tea (different sorts of green or black tea can be chosen from the menu) is accompanied by a range of small sandwiches in the flavours egg, beef, salmon, tuna, and cucumber, a plate with various petit fours and a plate with scones that come with strawberry jam and clotted cream. The service is super friendly (which is not that common in Vienna) and everything comes in good quality. (Just the petit fours seemed not that fresh - but most likely they aren't made directly at the shop but get delivered from another store.)
One person alone will pay 15 euros for his or her afternoon tea, whereas two people only pay 25 euros together - a good reason to come with a friend and use the opportunity to catch up on the latest gossip.
Also, please pay attention - the Haas & Haas tea house is not situated in the Haas House. Following the guidance of all the people around, my friend and me landed at Do&Co instead of Haas & Haas and had to ask them to give us directions of how to get to the other tea house. (I have to say the receptionist (manager?) there was very friendly and willing to help us with everything but unfortunatly one of his collegues seemed to be very annoyed by our mistake and was very upfront about that.)
For everyone who loves tea the Haas & Haas teahouse is the perfect place to visit - not only for getting afternoon tea ;)
The tea house is pretty small and cozy, yet offers a nice and classy feel. The clientele is very diverse and the waiters are welcoming to everyone who finds his way there.
